In the data displayed on the next page, for each category of operation, outcomes are displayed for 4 different time periods. In the first column are all operations carried out since January 1991, in the second column procedures since January 1996 and so on. In each column the data is expressed as a fraction where the first number is the number of deaths and the second is the total number of operations carried out.

The data includes all deaths occuring within 30 days of the date of operation, providing that death occured whilst the patient was an inpatient. The figures given are therefore a little less than both 30-day mortality and in-hospital mortality.

The abbreviations used to describe the operations are as follows:
CABG: coronary artery bypass graft
Redo: patient has undergone previous cardiac surgery
AVR: aortic valve replacement
MVR: mitral valve replacement
LVOT: left ventricular outflow tract

It is important to realise that some operations carry a greater risk than others. This data does not attempt to stratify operations according to risk.
